It's boiling down to either a Dell Latitude E7440 (my school gives a nice discount on them) or the HP ZBook 14. They both come in i7, FHD anti-glare displays, light, 8GB RAM, and upgradable HD/SSD (worst comes to worst, I buy the SSD myself). I like them both and it's just a matter of pricing. For the money, I don't think you can beat it.

I don't like any of the new ThinkPads due to their trackpads, keyboards, and pricing is $$$. What say you, Oppo? Someone recommended me to look at a Lenovo Y50 gaming laptop and I did... but the trackpad *really* irritated me.

I really dislike the trackpads on the new ThinkPads. I recommend MacBook > everything. But I think we already had this conversation.

Check out the Acer Travelmate P645-MG-9419 . FHD 14" matte screen, dedicated GPU, etc etc. Unlike these others, it weighs only 3.4 lbs. Because it's CARBON FIBER . It's the Windows laptop I was most likely going to buy before I decided to get a Macbook Pro.

I just got a MacBook, but if looking PC, I would go with the Dell. It has the better processor which you can't upgrade , it had the SSD you want. (linked one has i5 but you mention they both come with i7). Looks like they both can come with same same processor. Go with the lighter one or the one with better battery life.

Nawww you're making the wrong decision on the Lenovo. Buy a mouse. It's a faar better machine.

MSI GP and GE line should be in that price range. MSI has treated me well after years of so-so experiences with Dells both personal and work issued.

Got a mouse already. I've had 7 ThinkPads over the years, so... I think I know what I'm doing by not going back to Lenovo.

Will consider those too. I haven't had good experience with Dells, but all the ones I've used were consumer grade, not business line.

Stay away from HP. They are badly designed, and WILL overheat.

For me...

There's no other windows laptop other than VAIO.

My first VAIO was the VAIO X. It's uber stupid netbook made out of Carbon Fibre, so it's cost 1299USD back in late 2000 if i remember. But it's thin, light, and pretty. Seriously, it weigh roughly 600 grams. I still carry them arround sometimes, because it's so light.

Then i bought the P. It's an even more stupid netbook, but i love the quirkiness of it. I still keep it, but rarely used it because it's quite hard to use.

Then the Z, insanely fast but insanely expensive.

Then i settle down for the Pro 13. I think it's quite a deal, that Pro 13. It's light, thin, and pretty. Thinner and lighter than macbook air in fact. I love that laptop.

Is it sturdy? I looked at a bunch of VAIOs and most of them had crazy keyboard/chassis flex.

Go look at them both in a real store. Pick them up, twist them, see which is stronger. If you plan to keep it for a few years, build quality of the chassis is much, much more important than the headline specs.

Yes. For Shame :(

I think i'll bought 2 VAIO Tap 11 as a last hurrah, and keep one still in box as a time capsule.

My mom do that when Apple discontinues their Messagepad. I think i'll do that as well.

I'm not sure if it was mentioned before, but I recommend the Razer Blade . It's a high-performance touchscreen Windows laptop in a MacBook quality package, and it is very thin and light for the performance numbers it pushes out. I have the 512 version, and I would buy it again. Here are some reviews from Engadget , Cnet , The Verge , and IGN to help you decide if the Razer Blade is right for you. The Microsoft Store is offering a 10% Student Discount on the New Razer Blade; just make sure to buy the updated 2014 version with the touchscreen.

( Full Disclosure : Razer wanted me to use a New Razer Blade so badly that they promised to sell me one for full price and pushed back my shipping date three times; this is when I jumped ship to the Microsoft Store. The Microsoft Store wanted to sell me the New Razer Blade so badly that they "reviewed" my order for a full day before agreeing to sell me the New Razer Blade with a 10% Education Discount. It sounds horrible, but my experience wasn't too bad.)

Not sure if Dell still owns Alienware but when I had an M17X it still was. It was horrendous and had loads of issues. Also all of the others were old school desktops (Its been so long- I cant remember the models). By in large I find unless you are going to spend loads of money with Dell, you aren't going to get ANY real power. Their monitors are pretty decent though.

Between the 2 I would go with the Dell, their business products are relatively sturdy and that keyboard and mouse looks like it would be a better experience than the HP.
I also personally think that with the company going private again they are going to quietly increase support and overall quality to bring their name back up, it might not be today per se, but I'm hoping they will slowly build back up.

What I would really look into are Toshiba's, I think they are making very solid designs right now, I have an S55 3rd gen i7 and a p55 4th gen i7 and I have been happy so far, I think their Kira laptop might be something to look into for you.

I also like Asus right now, I had a little i3 11.5 inch touchscreen (netbook?) around a year ago, it felt like it had good build quality as well (as long as you get an aluminum one you should be good, I didn't like their cheaper plastic economy computer)

Every Asus and Toshiba laptop I looked at had poor build quality or massive flex. I went with the ZBook since I couldn't really justify spending over $1,000 on a Dell and the Dell had many keyboard complaints. The ZBook is awesome so far. Good quality, the touchpad is actually decent, screen is lovely.

I'm glad you like it. I was mainly talking about personal experience from my part.

Just be careful with it and you will be fine with any computer that you have.

The latest computer I just bought is a macbook air, very sleek and smooth, in fact im worried about it sliding off of my lap when im on the couch.
